More athletes underperform because of this than any other reason.
As a sports nutritionist the area of IMMUNITY gives me the most anxiety.
Just about everything else is taken care of in the lead up to an event, however it can be a minefield ensuring players don't get sick.
I take things personally and when someone get's ill and they either can't play or they have to play and they're not at their best- it's really tough to take.
I've got a lot more experience now after 10 years of working with elite rugby squads and have developed a whole range of IMMUNE BOOSTING tools and strategies that enable me to be PRO-ACTIVE and start building immunity for my players before an infection even thinks about taking hold.
When itcomes to infection you need to be on the front foot, there is no point waiting until you start sniffling or get a tickly throat before taking action.
That still happens from time to time and knowing what to do in those situations has certainly saved my bacon on a number of occasions.
It's hard to take credit for some big game wins but I know and so do some of the players that if it weren't for some of my 'Magic potions' they would not have even made it onto the pitch.
When you're a serious athlete in whatever sport you play, getting ILL is one of the biggest fears you can have. Don't ever sneeze near an athlete, if you do, expect to get some FILTHY LOOKS.
Whenever a major sporting event comes around there is always one or 2 athletes who underperform because of an illness they have picked up in the lead up to the event. The All Black's team the World Cup in 1995, they were overwhelming favorites until some of them got sick before the game.
Athletes never like to come out and admit, that sickness was the reason they underperformed, it looks like sour grapes and bad sportsmanship , but if you've ever picked up a cold in the lead up to a big event then you'll know how easy it is to knock you off your game.
Athletes are always walking a TIGHT ROPE between training hard and having a strong immune system.
It's impossible to train hard and not stress your immune system.
If you are not stressing and weakening your immune system then you are probably not training hard enough.
What you have to learn is how to eat the right foods and supplement so that you SUPPORT your Immune system and recover adequately in time for your next training session.
If you don't do this you are headed in a spiral downwards that is going to lead to you getting ill and missing more training.
If you only get one heavy cold a year then you are potential losing 6% of your training time.
How do I work that out?
You won't be making any gains in the time that you are coming down with the cold (1 week gone).
Write off the week when it's at it's worse you'll probably need to miss a couple of sessions (2nd week gone).
The week you are getting back into training is likely to be devoid of any gains as you are still recovering (3 weeks gone).
So one cold can knock 3 weeks out of your year.
Get a couple of colds a year and you might as well be competing with one hand tied behind your back.
